UPDATE: September 26th, St. Louis Missouri: Congressman Russ Carnahan has agreed to publically debate GOP Candidate Chris Sander on October 16th.
The location for the debate has been moved and will now be held at the Antonia Fire District Station #2 located at 6633 Moss Hollow Road, Barnhart, MO from 7-9 PM. The event will be moderated by the League of Women Voters in a town hall forum with all questions being submitted from the audience.
This is an open event and the public is encouraged to attend.
"I applaud Congressman Carnahan for coming out and agreeing to this debate." "It will be electric to say the least, if for nothing more than to allow the voters the opportunity to hear our views on issues", says Sander. "I just hope that he doesn't cancel at the last moment as he did in the last election."
In 2006, Congressman Carnahan had scheduled a debate with GOP Candidate Dave Bertelsen, but canceled two days prior citing a scheduling conflict.
September 19th, St. Louis, Missouri. GOP Congressional Candidate for Missouri 3rd District has received the support of the American Legion. Sander, an advocate for Veterans and their families presented his platform to Past National Commander, Joe Frank and Commander Richard A. Heigert, Col. U.S. Army (Ret) on Wednesday.
Both men expressed their overwhelming support for the reforms that Mr.Sander outlined. "It is extremely encouraging to see that someone like Mr. Sander completely understands the problems and challenges that are facing our veterans and their families", said Frank.
The fact that 60 percent of our troops in Iraq and Afganistan are in the reserves poses an alarming problem when those troops return home. Once these troops return and are removed from active duty, they become dependent on private insurance and other benefits to cover costs associated with medical care. The problem is that many of them fall victim to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) shortly after being removed from active duty.
If their medical records don't reflect the existence of such a condition at the time of removal from active duty, then private insurance won't cover costs associated with the treatment of the disorder.
"The way that our government treats our veterans and their families is disgusting", says Sander. "These servicemen and women leave their families and put their lives on the line for us, and when they return home, many of them badly injured, they don't receive the care that they need to return to a normal life". "This doesn't even take into consideration the help that their familes need as well".
Sander's proposal is to provide every veteran a credit card issued by the government, that will allow them and their immediate family members access to any doctor, at any facility, for any proceduce and for any reason at any time, with no cost to them whatsoever. "Making sure that our soldiers' medical expenses are covered is the least we can do for them." "As a taxpayer, I would rather pay for medical treatment for a soldier than sending 2 billion dollars in foreign aid to Saudi Arabia, which our government does every year".
Once in office, Sander has indicated that he wants a dedicated liason who works directly with the veterans to make sure that all of their concerns are being met.
