The bottom line is that the hard shell of the whole flax seed protect all the contents; period. Our digestive systems are not able to break the hard shell down and so they basically pass straight through you.

So how do you eat flax seed then to get to all the great nutrition inside? Well you grind all of them up say for example coffee mill after which you may easily sprinkle these over all sorts of things for example cereals, soups, put in smoothies, on salads, yogurts and so on. So either buy whole flax seed and grind them down or may be you want to have more convenience and simple buy flax seed meal in smaller amounts so you can use it all up before it goes off.

Depending on the form of flax seed you have, the shelf life changes; it is believed that the longest shelf life is possessed by whole flax seeds.
